**A Versatile, Age-Hardenable Nickel-Based Superalloy for High-Temperature Applications**
---
#### **1. Overview**
**Waspaloy** (pronounced *Wasp-a-loy*) is a premier, age-hardenable nickel-based superalloy renowned for its excellent combination of high tensile strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance at temperatures up to **980°C (1800°F)**. It exhibits good fabricability and is one of the most widely used superalloys for critical components in gas turbine engines.
Its key advantage lies in its balanced properties, offering high strength without the processing complexities of some more advanced alloys. Waspaloy is typically supplied in the solution-annealed condition, which allows for machining and forming, and is subsequently age-hardened to achieve its peak mechanical properties.
#### **2. Chemical Composition (Typical Weight %)**
The composition is designed to create a stable microstructure with a significant volume fraction of the strengthening gamma prime (γ') phase.
| Element | Content (%) | Role in the Alloy |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Nickel (Ni)** | Balance | Forms the austenitic (FCC) matrix. |
| **Chromium (Cr)** | ~19.5 | Provides excellent oxidation and hot corrosion resistance. |
| **Cobalt (Co)** | ~13.5 | Solid solution strengthener. |
| **Molybdenum (Mo)** | ~4.3 | Potent solid solution strengthener. |
| **Aluminum (Al)** | ~1.4 | Forms the primary strengthening γ' phase (Ni₃(Al,Ti)). |
| **Titanium (Ti)** | ~3.0 | Forms the primary strengthening γ' phase (Ni₃(Al,Ti)). |
| **Carbon (C)** | ~0.07 | Forms carbides (e.g., M₂₃C₆) for grain boundary strength. |
| **Boron (B)** | ~0.006 | Enhances creep life and grain boundary strength. |
| **Zirconium (Zr)** | ~0.05 | Further improves creep resistance. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | ≤ 1.0 | Residual element. |
#### **3. Physical Properties (Typical)**
| Property | Value / Condition |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 8.22 g/cm³ (0.297 lb/in³) |
| **Melting Range** | ~1330 - 1360 °C (~2425 - 2480 °F) |
| **Thermal Expansion Coefficient** | ~13.9 μm/m·°C (20 - 540°C) |
| **Thermal Conductivity** | ~12.0 W/m·K (at 100°C) |
| **Modulus of Elasticity** | ~206 GPa (30 x 10⁶ psi) at 20°C |
#### **4. Mechanical Properties**
Properties are developed through a solution treatment followed by a two-stage aging process. The following are typical for bar stock in the fully heat-treated condition (per AMS 5708).
**At Room Temperature:**
* **Tensile Strength:** > 1200 MPa (175 ksi)
* **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** > 795 MPa (115 ksi)
* **Elongation:** > 15%
* **Reduction of Area:** > 18%
**At Elevated Temperature (e.g., 730°C / 1350°F):**
* **Tensile Strength:** ~795 MPa (115 ksi)
* **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** ~690 MPa (100 ksi)
* **Creep-Rupture Strength:** Excellent, capable of withstanding high stresses for extended periods, making it ideal for turbine disk applications.
#### **5. Heat Treatment**
A standard heat treatment cycle for Waspaloy is as follows:
1. **Solution Treatment:** Heat to 1080°C (1975°F), hold, then rapidly cool (quench in oil or forced air). This dissolves the γ' forming elements into the matrix.
2. **Stabilization:** A step at 845°C (1550°F) is sometimes used to precipitate certain carbides.
3. **Aging Treatment:** A two-stage aging process (e.g., 760°C / 1400°F for 4-8 hours, then 650°C / 1200°F for 16-24 hours) is used to precipitate a fine, uniform distribution of the γ' phase.
#### **6. Product Applications**
Waspaloy is a workhorse alloy in the aerospace and power generation industries, used in:
* **Gas Turbine Engine Components:** Turbine disks, compressor disks, shafts, spacers, and rotating seals.
* **Turbine Blades and Vanes** (especially in later stages).
* **High-Temperature Fasteners,** bolts, and nuts.
* **Industrial Gas Turbine (IGT)** components.
* **Afterburner Parts.**
#### **7. International and Industry Standards**
Waspaloy is covered by a wide range of international and proprietary specifications.
* **UNS:** **N07001**
* **Werkstoff Nr.:** **2.4654**
* **AMS (Aerospace Material Specification):**
