### **Product Introduction: Permalloy Foil & Shim** **Permalloy Foil and Shim** represent the ultra-thin and flexible form of the renowned nickel-iron soft magnetic alloys. These products are engineered for applications where minimal weight, minimal space, and exceptional magnetic shielding efficiency are critical. Available in thicknesses from a few microns up to a few hundred microns, our Permalloy foils and shims offer the same high magnetic permeability and low coercivity as their bulk counterparts but with the versatility to be wrapped, stamped, or layered into complex geometries. These materials are the ideal solution for isolating sensitive components from stray magnetic fields in modern, miniaturized electronics and advanced scientific instrumentation. --- #### **1. Chemical Composition** Permalloy Foils are produced from precisely controlled melts to ensure consistent magnetic performance. The most common grades are detailed below. **Typical Chemical Composition (Weight %):** | Alloy Grade | Ni (Nickel) | Fe (Iron) | Mo (Molybdenum) | Cu (Copper) | Cr (Chromium) | Mn (Manganese) | Other | | :--- | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | | **Standard Permalloy 80** | 78.0 - 81.0 | Balance | - | - | - | 0.30 - 0.60 | - | | **Molybdenum-Permalloy** | 78.0 - 81.0 | Balance | 3.90 - 4.50 | - | - | 0.30 - 0.60 | - | | **Mumetal®-Type Alloy** | ~77 | Balance | - | ~5 | ~2 | - | - | *Note: "Shim" typically refers to the same material as foil, often implying its use as a thin insert or spacer for precise magnetic or dimensional adjustment.* --- #### **2. Physical & Magnetic Properties** The properties of foil are highly dependent on its final annealed condition, which develops the optimal magnetic structure. **A. Magnetic Properties (After Final Hydrogen Anneal):** * **Initial Permeability (μᵢ):** 20,000 - 100,000 (Molybdenum-Permalloy grades achieve the higher end) * **Maximum Permeability (μₘₐₓ):** 70,000 - 300,000 * **Coercivity (Hc):** Extremely Low, typically 0.01 - 0.1 Oe * **Saturation Induction (Bs):** 0.65 - 0.80 Tesla * **Magnetostriction:** Near-zero, ensuring stable performance under stress. **B. Typical Foil/Shim Specifications:** * **Available Thickness:** 0.001 mm (1 µm) to 0.25 mm (250 µm) * **Standard Width:** Up to 300 mm (can be slit to custom widths) * **Temper:** Supplied in annealed condition or hard-rolled for further fabrication. * **Surface Finish:** Bright, clean, and free of contaminants critical for sensitive applications. **C. Mechanical & Physical Properties:** * **Density:** 8.70 - 8.80 g/cm³ * **Tensile Strength (Annealed):** 450 - 550 MPa * **Yield Strength (Annealed):** 200 - 300 MPa * **Elongation:** 20% - 40% * **Electrical Resistivity:** 55 - 65 μΩ·cm (for Mo-Permalloy, reducing eddy current losses) --- #### **3. Product Applications** The thin, conformable nature of Permalloy foil makes it indispensable in a wide range of high-tech fields. * **Advanced Electronics Shielding:** * **Consumer Electronics:** Shielding flexible displays, smartphone sensors, and internal ICs. * **Medical Devices:** Critical shielding in pacemakers, implantable sensors, and MRI components. * **Aerospace & Defense:** Conformal shielding for avionics, guidance systems, and satellite communication equipment. * **Scientific and Research Equipment:** * **Electron Microscopes:** Creating shielded environments for electron beams. * **Particle Physics:** Thin, layered shielding in detectors and beamlines. * **Quantum Computing:** Shielding for qubits and sensitive measurement apparatus. * **Specialized Industrial Uses:** * **Thin-Film Transformers & Inductors:** Core material for micro-inductors on printed circuit boards (PCBs). * **Precision Sensors:** As a flux concentrator or shield in magneto-resistive sensors. * **Acoustic Devices:** Shielding for high-performance microphones and speakers. --- #### **4. International Standards** Our Permalloy Foil and Shim products are manufactured to meet the stringent requirements of international standards for chemical and magnetic properties. * **ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials):** * **ASTM A753 / A753M:** "Standard Specification for Nickel-Iron Soft Magnetic Alloys." This is the overarching standard for Permalloy materials, including thin strip and foil. * **ASTM F390:** "Standard Test Method for Sheet Resistance of Thin Metallic Films" (relevant for characterizing very thin foils). * **IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission):** * **IEC 60404-8-6:** "Magnetic materials - Part 8-6: Specifications for individual materials - Soft magnetic metallic materials." * **Military Standards (USA):** * **MIL-N-14411C:** Covers nickel-iron soft magnetic alloys for electronic components. * **Other Standards:** * **DIN 17405:** Precision alloys in flat forms. * **JIS C 2531:** Japanese standard for resistance alloys and soft magnetic alloys. --- #### **5. Key Advantages & Handling Considerations** * **Ultra-High Permeability in a Thin Form:** Provides excellent attenuation of low-frequency magnetic fields. * **Conformability:** Can be easily bent, wrapped, or layered to fit complex shapes and small spaces. * **Precision Thickness:** Guaranteed tolerances for high-volume, automated assembly. * **Custom Fabrication:** Available in pre-cut shapes, discs, rings, or continuous rolls. **Important Handling Note:** Permalloy foil is a *precision soft magnetic material*. Its supreme magnetic properties are achieved through a final hydrogen annealing process after fabrication. Any severe mechanical deformation (e.g., bending, stamping) after annealing will degrade its magnetic performance. For best results, parts should be formed first and then annealed. **We provide expert technical support to help you design your shielding solution and specify the correct fabrication and heat-treatment process for your Permalloy foil and shim components.**
