### **Technical Datasheet: Ni-SA U700 (INCONEL® Alloy 700 / Waspaloy Analog)** **Classification:** Nickel-Based, Gamma-Prime (γ') Strengthened Superalloy **Common Names:** Ni-SA U700, Alloy U700 **Analogous Alloys:** INCONEL® Alloy 700, Waspaloy (similar performance class) --- #### **1.0 Introduction** **Ni-SA U700** is a high-strength, precipitation-hardenable nickel-based superalloy designed for exceptional performance at elevated temperatures. As part of the Ni-SA (Nickel Super Alloys) family, it is strengthened by the precipitation of a coherent gamma prime (γ') phase [Ni₃(Al, Ti)] within its austenitic matrix. This alloy is engineered to deliver an outstanding balance of **high tensile and creep-rupture strength, excellent oxidation resistance, and good structural stability** at temperatures up to 1800°F (980°C). It is a critical material for the most demanding rotating components in aerospace and industrial gas turbines. --- #### **2.0 Chemical Composition (Weight %)** The composition is balanced to form a stable volume fraction of the γ' strengthening phase while providing environmental resistance. | Element | Minimum | Maximum | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | **Balance** | | Forms the austenitic (gamma) matrix. | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 14.0 | 17.0 | Provides resistance to oxidation and sulfidation. | | **Cobalt (Co)** | 14.0 | 20.0 | Solid-solution strengthener; enhances high-temperature strength. | | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 3.5 | 5.0 | Potent solid-solution strengthener in the gamma matrix. | | **Aluminum (Al)** | 2.5 | 4.0 | **Primary Gamma' Former:** Forms the Ni₃Al strengthening phase. | | **Titanium (Ti)** | 2.5 | 3.5 | **Gamma' Former:** Forms the Ni₃Ti phase, co-precipitating with Ni₃Al. | | **Iron (Fe)** | - | 2.0 | Kept low to ensure microstructural stability. | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.05 | 0.15 | Forms primary carbides for grain boundary strengthening. | | **Boron (B)** | 0.005 | 0.015 | Strengthens grain boundaries and improves creep ductility. | | **Zirconium (Zr)** | 0.02 | 0.08 | Further enhances grain boundary strength and stability. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | - | 0.50 | - | | **Silicon (Si)** | - | 0.50 | - | | **Sulfur (S)** | - | 0.015 | - | --- #### **3.0 Physical Properties** | Property | Value | Condition | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.92 g/cm³ (0.286 lb/in³) | At room temperature | | **Melting Range** | ~1335 - 1360 °C (~2435 - 2480 °F) | - | | **Thermal Expansion Coefficient** | 12.8 μm/m·°C | 20 - 100°C | | **Thermal Conductivity** | 18.7 W/m·K | At 100°C | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 214 GPa (31.0 x 10⁶ psi) | At room temperature | --- #### **4.0 Mechanical Properties (Typical for Fully Heat-Treated Condition)** | Property | Value at Room Temperature | Value at 1200°F (650°C) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength** | 1310 MPa (190 ksi) | 1035 MPa (150 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 1035 MPa (150 ksi) | 895 MPa (130 ksi) | | **Elongation** | 15% | 12% | ***Creep-Rupture Strength:*** Excellent; for example, it demonstrates a 1000-hour rupture stress of approximately **240 MPa (35 ksi) at 870°C (1600°F)**. --- #### **5.0 Key Characteristics & Applications** **5.1 Key Characteristics:** * **Exceptional High-Temperature Strength:** Maintains high tensile, creep, and rupture strength up to 980°C (1800°F) due to a stable volume fraction of γ' precipitates. * **Excellent Oxidation Resistance:** The chromium content provides good resistance to scaling and oxidation in air at high temperatures. * **Precipitation Hardenable:** Requires a specific multi-step heat treatment (solution treating + aging) to achieve optimal mechanical properties. * **Good Microstructural Stability:** Resists the over-aging and coalescence of the γ' phase for extended service life. **5.2 Primary Applications:** Ni-SA U700 is predominantly used in the most critical high-stress, high-temperature rotating components. * **Aerospace & Jet Engines:** * **Turbine Blades and Vanes** * **Turbine Disks (Rotors) and Shafts** * **Compressor Disks and Shafts** * **Spacers and Seals** * **Industrial Gas Turbines (IGT):** * **Buckets (Blades), Wheels, and Disks** * **Rocket Engines:** * Turbopump components. --- #### **6.0 International Standards** While "U700" is a common industry designation, it is often supplied to specifications for its direct analogs or under proprietary standards. | Product Form | Standard Number | Governing Body | Notes | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Bar, Forgings, Ring** | **AMS 5705** | SAE International | For INCONEL Alloy 700, a direct analog. | | **Bar, Forgings, Ring** | **AMS 5704** | SAE International | For Waspaloy, a similar performance alloy. | | **Bar & Billet** | ASTM B637 (Grade UNS N07001) | ASTM International | Standard for Ni-Based Superalloy Bar. | | **Aerospace Material** | **Pratt & Whitney PWA 1108** | Proprietary | Engine manufacturer specification. | | **General Material** | **UNS N07001** | - | Unified Numbering System for Alloy U700. | **Note:** "INCONEL" is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation. "Ni-SA U700" is used here as a generic technical designation for this alloy family. The specific heat treatment condition is critical and must be specified during procurement. Forging and heat treatment processes are tightly controlled to achieve the required microstructural properties.
