### **Introduction to Haynes® 282® (UNS N07208) Nickel-Based Superalloy** **Haynes® 282®** is a advanced gamma prime (γ') strengthened nickel-based superalloy designed to meet the demanding requirements of next-generation high-temperature applications. It achieves an exceptional balance of three critical properties: **high-temperature creep strength, thermal stability, and fabricability**. Developed in the early 2000s, it fills the performance gap between older alloys like Waspaloy and Alloy 263 and more complex, less fabricable alloys like R-41. A key advantage of Haynes 282 is its excellent creep rupture strength at temperatures ranging from 1200°F to 1800°F (650°C to 1000°C), combined with significantly better weldability and formability than many other high-strength superalloys. --- ### **Chemical Composition (Weight %, typical)** The composition is meticulously balanced to form a stable volume fraction of the γ' strengthening phase [Ni₃(Al, Ti)] while controlling other elements for long-term stability. | Element | Minimum | Maximum | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | **Balance** | | Forms the austenitic (gamma) matrix. | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 19.0 | 21.0 | Provides essential resistance to oxidation and hot corrosion. | | **Cobalt (Co)** | 9.0 | 11.0 | Reduces the stacking fault energy, solid-solution strengthens, and enhances creep strength. | | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 8.0 | 9.0 | Provides potent solid-solution strengthening in the gamma matrix. | | **Aluminum (Al)** | 1.3 | 1.7 | **Gamma' Former:** Combines with Ni to form the primary strengthening phase, Ni₃Al. | | **Titanium (Ti)** | 2.0 | 2.4 | **Gamma' Former:** Combines with Ni to form Ni₃Ti, co-precipitating with Ni₃Al. | | **Iron (Fe)** | - | 1.5 | Kept low to maintain microstructural stability. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | - | 0.30 | - | | **Silicon (Si)** | - | 0.15 | Kept low to avoid forming low-melting eutectics. | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.05 | 0.10 | Forms primary carbides for grain boundary strengthening. | | **Boron (B)** | 0.003 | 0.008 | Strengthens grain boundaries and improves creep ductility. | | **Sulfur (S)** | - | 0.005 | - | --- ### **Physical Properties (Typical)** * **Density:** 8.69 g/cm³ (0.314 lb/in³) * **Melting Range:** ~1330 - 1365 °C (~2425 - 2490 °F) * **Thermal Expansion Coefficient:** 13.5 μm/m·°C (20-1000°C) * **Thermal Conductivity:** 11.7 W/m·K at 100°C * **Modulus of Elasticity (Young's Modulus):** 224 GPa (32.5 x 10⁶ psi) at 21°C --- ### **Mechanical Properties (Typical)** Haynes 282 requires a two-step aging heat treatment to achieve its optimal properties. **Room Temperature Properties (After Full Heat Treatment):** * **Tensile Strength:** ≥ 1100 MPa (160 ksi) * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** ≥ 800 MPa (116 ksi) * **Elongation:** ≥ 17% **High-Temperature Capability:** * **Creep Rupture Strength:** Excellent; for example, it demonstrates a 1000-hour rupture stress of approximately **110 MPa (16 ksi) at 980°C (1800°F)**. --- ### **Key Characteristics and Product Applications** #### **Key Characteristics:** 1. **Excellent Creep Strength:** Offers superior long-term, load-bearing capability at high temperatures compared to many other fabricable superalloys. 2. **Good Thermal Stability:** Resists the formation of deleterious Topologically Close-Packed (TCP) phases during long-term exposure, which preserves ductility and toughness. 3. **Superior Fabricability:** Exhibits good formability and, most notably, **excellent weldability** with low strain-age cracking susceptibility, a common issue with other γ'-strengthened alloys like Alloy 718. 4. **Oxidation Resistance:** The high chromium content provides adequate oxidation resistance for most industrial gas turbine and aerospace applications. #### **Primary Applications:** Haynes 282 is targeted at the most demanding high-temperature components in aerospace and energy sectors. * **Aerospace & Gas Turbine Engines:** * **Turbine Blades and Vanes (Airfoils)** * **Combustor Liners and Casings** * **Turbine Disks (Rotors)** * **Afterburner Components** * **Industrial Gas Turbines (IGT):** * **Transition Ducts, Combustors, and Nozzles** * **Advanced Energy Systems:** * Components in next-generation nuclear reactors. * **Rocket Engines:** * Nozzles and other hot-gas-path components. --- ### **International Standards** Haynes 282 is now well-established and covered by major aerospace and industrial standards. | Product Form | Standard | Designation | Notes | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Bar, Forgings, Ring** | **AMS 5952** | Haynes 282 Alloy | The primary aerospace material specification for bar and forged shapes. | | **Sheet, Plate, Strip** | **AMS 5912** | Haynes 282 Alloy | Specification for sheet, strip, and plate forms. | | **Welding Wire** | N/A | - | While a specific AWS classification is not yet formalized, matching-composition filler metal **Haynes 282 Welding Wire** is available from the manufacturer. | | **Billet & Bar** | ASTM B637 (Grade UNS N07208) | UNS N07208 | Standard Specification for Nickel-Based Superalloy Bar and Billet. | **Note:** "Haynes" and "282" are registered trademarks of **Haynes International, Inc.** It is a premium, high-performance alloy whose use requires careful consideration of heat treatment and fabrication parameters. Consultation with the manufacturer for specific application engineering is highly recommended.
