### **Product Datasheet: Alloy 450 / Monel® 450 Bar** **Round Bar & Flat Bar** **A Robust, Non-Age-Hardenable Nickel-Copper Alloy Bar for Machined Components and Structural Parts** --- #### **Overview** Alloy 450 (Monel 450) Bar is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-copper alloy supplied in both round and flat bar forms. This non-age-hardenable alloy is specifically valued for its excellent machinability, superior toughness, and outstanding resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, including seawater, acids, and alkalis. The round bar is primarily used for machining into rotating or static components like shafts, valves, and fasteners. The flat bar is ideal for applications requiring wear strips, structural supports, brackets, and custom-fabricated parts in aggressive environments. Together, they offer a reliable material solution for the marine, chemical processing, and oil and gas industries. --- #### **Key Features & Advantages** * **Superior Corrosion Resistance:** Excellent resistance to seawater, sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and alkaline solutions, outperforming many stainless steels. * **High Strength and Durability:** Offers an excellent combination of tensile strength, yield strength, and impact toughness from cryogenic temperatures to moderately high operating temperatures. * **Immunity to Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking:** A critical advantage in marine and chemical processing applications where stainless steels would fail. * **Excellent Machinability:** Both round and flat bars can be machined to precise tolerances efficiently, with a machinability rating similar to free-machining brass. * **Good Weldability:** Can be easily welded using common techniques (GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG) without requiring post-weld heat treatment. * **Non-Magnetic:** Provides reliable non-magnetic properties in all conditions. --- #### **Chemical Composition (Weight % - Typical)** The composition is controlled to ensure consistent performance in bar products. | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | 63.0 - 70.0 | | **Copper (Cu)** | 26.0 - 33.0 | | **Iron (Fe)** | 2.0 - 3.0 | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.5 max | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.3 max | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.5 max | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.024 max | --- #### **Physical Properties** | Property | Value / Condition | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 8.80 g/cm³ (0.318 lb/in³) | | **Melting Point** | 1350 - 1400 °C (2460 - 2550 °F) | | **Electrical Resistivity** | ~51 μΩ·cm at 20°C | | **Thermal Conductivity** | ~21.8 W/m·K at 20°C | | **Thermal Expansion Coefficient** | 14.2 μm/m·K (20-100°C) | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 179 GPa (26 x 10⁶ psi) | | **Magnetic Permeability** | **~1.0** (Essentially non-magnetic) | --- #### **Mechanical Properties (Typical for Bar)** Properties are dependent on size and temper (hot finished, cold drawn, annealed). **Room Temperature Properties (Hot Finished & Annealed)** * **Tensile Strength:** 550 - 690 MPa (80 - 100 ksi) * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 240 - 380 MPa (35 - 55 ksi) * **Elongation (in 4D):** 35 - 45% **Room Temperature Properties (Cold Drawn & Stress-Relieved)** * **Tensile Strength:** 620 - 760 MPa (90 - 110 ksi) * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 480 - 620 MPa (70 - 90 ksi) * **Elongation (in 4D):** 15 - 25% --- #### **International Standards** Alloy 450 Bar conforms to several key international standards. * **ASTM (USA):** * **ASTM B164:** Standard Specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy Rod, Bar, and Wire. * *Covers both round, square, and hexagonal bars.* * **UNS (Unified Numbering System):** **N05500** *Note: It is critical to specify the non-age-hardenable requirement, as UNS N05500 is also associated with Monel K-500. The distinction is made by the heat treatment and mechanical properties.* * **ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers):** **SB-164** * **DIN (Germany):** **2.4370** * **ISO (International Organization for Standardization):** Can be supplied to equivalent ISO specifications upon request. --- #### **Product Applications** **Round Bar Applications:** * **Pump and Valve Shafts:** For centrifugal and reciprocating pumps handling seawater, brines, and corrosive chemicals. * **Fastener Stock:** Used to manufacture high-strength, corrosion-resistant bolts, studs, and nuts. * **Marine Components:** Propeller shafts, rudder stocks, and dive knife hilts. * **Machined Parts:** Bushings, bearings, valve stems, and other custom components in chemical processing equipment. * **Oil & Gas:** Non-magnetic drill collar components and tooling for sour service environments. **Flat Bar Applications:** * **Wear Strips and Liners:** For scrubbers, reactors, and material handling equipment subject to corrosion and abrasion. * **Structural Supports and Brackets:** In marine, chemical, and offshore structures where corrosion resistance is critical. * **Baffles and Weirs:** Inside tanks and process vessels. * **Repair and Cladding:** Used to rebuild or clad worn areas on existing equipment. * **Architectural and Marine Fittings:** For non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant rails and fixtures. --- #### **Fabrication Notes** * **Machining:** Machines similarly to Monel 400. Use positive rake angles, rigid setups, and sharp tools. Recommended speeds are slightly lower than for steel. * **Welding:** Highly weldable. Use Monel 60 or 67 filler metal. Preheating is not required. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not necessary for this non-age-hardenable grade. * **Forging:** Forging temperature range is 1050 - 1150°C (1920 - 2100°F). --- **Disclaimer:** *Monel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation (a PCC company).* The information provided is typical and for reference purposes. Mechanical properties are dependent on bar size and temper. It is essential to confirm with the supplier that the product supplied meets the specific requirements for the non-age-hardenable grade of Alloy 450 for your application.
