### **Technical Datasheet: Nickel 200 (Alloy 200 / UNS N02200)** #### **1. Introduction** Nickel 200 (commonly known as Alloy 200, and standardized as UNS N02200) is a commercially pure wrought nickel (99.6% minimum). It is a solid-solution alloy that possesses excellent mechanical properties and high thermal and electrical conductivity. Its outstanding corrosion resistance in a wide range of reducing and neutral environments makes it a versatile material for demanding applications in the chemical processing, aerospace, and electrical industries. The alloy is characterized by its good low-temperature performance, resistance to caustic alkalis, and high resistance to various forms of corrosion, including chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. **Note on High-Temperature Use:** For service temperatures above 315°C (600°F), **Nickel 201 (UNS N02201)** is the preferred grade. Nickel 201 has a lower carbon content (0.02% max), which prevents the embrittlement caused by grain-boundary carbide precipitation that can occur in Nickel 200 at elevated temperatures. #### **2. Chemical Composition (Typical % Weight)** The chemical composition of Nickel 200 conforms to the following standard limits: | Element | Content (%) (ASTM B160) | Content (%) (Typical) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | 99.0 min | ≥ 99.6 | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.15 max | 0.08 | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.35 max | 0.20 | | **Iron (Fe)** | 0.40 max | 0.20 | | **Copper (Cu)** | 0.25 max | 0.15 | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.35 max | 0.15 | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.01 max | 0.005 | #### **3. Physical Properties** | Property | Metric Unit | Imperial Unit | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 8.89 g/cm³ | 0.321 lb/in³ | | **Melting Point** | 1435-1445 °C | 2615-2633 °F | | **Thermal Conductivity** (at 25°C) | 70 W/m·K | 485 BTU·in/hr·ft²·°F | | **Electrical Resistivity** | 0.095 µΩ·m | 36.5 µΩ·in | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 186 GPa | 27 x 10⁶ psi | | **Thermal Expansion Coefficient** (20-100°C) | 13.3 µm/m·°C | 7.4 x 10⁻⁶ in/in·°F | #### **4. Mechanical Properties (Typical at Room Temperature)** The mechanical properties vary with the product form and temper. **Sheet & Strip (Annealed Condition)** * **Tensile Strength:** 380 - 550 MPa (55 - 80 ksi) * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 105 - 245 MPa (15 - 35 ksi) * **Elongation (in 2 inches):** 40 - 55% **Rod & Bar (Annealed Condition)** * **Tensile Strength:** 460 - 620 MPa (67 - 90 ksi) * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 150 - 310 MPa (22 - 45 ksi) * **Elongation:** 40 - 50% #### **5. International Standards** Nickel 200 is covered by a wide range of international specifications, depending on the product form. | Product Form | ASTM Standard | ASME Standard | UNS | EN/DIN Standard | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Plate, Sheet & Strip** | ASTM B162 | SB-162 | N02200 | Ni 99.2 (2.4066) | | **Rod & Bar** | ASTM B160 | SB-160 | N02200 | Ni 99.2 (2.4066) | | **Pipe & Tube** | ASTM B161, B725/B725M | SB-161, SB-725 | N02200 | Ni 99.2 (2.4066) | | **Forgings** | ASTM B564 | SB-564 | N02200 | - | | **Wire** | ASTM B160 | - | N02200 | - | #### **6. Key Characteristics & Advantages** * **Excellent Corrosion Resistance:** Resists corrosion by dilute sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, caustic alkalis, and various neutral and reducing salts. * **High Thermal & Electrical Conductivity:** Superior to most corrosion-resistant alloys. * **Good Mechanical Properties:** Maintains strength and ductility from cryogenic temperatures up to about 315°C (600°F). * **Low-Temperature Suitability:** Excellent toughness and ductility at cryogenic temperatures. * **Magnetic:** Nickel 200 is magnetically soft (ferromagnetic) at room temperature but becomes non-magnetic (paramagnetic) above its Curie temperature of approximately 360°C (680°F). * **Ease of Fabrication:** Can be readily formed and machined using standard techniques. #### **7. Product Applications** Nickel 200 is used across numerous industries due to its unique combination of properties: * **Chemical Processing:** * Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) production and handling equipment. * Reaction vessels, evaporators, and heat exchangers for processing halogen acids. * Piping, valves, and pumps for handling corrosive chemicals. * **Food & Pharmaceutical Processing:** * Equipment for fatty acid and soap manufacturing where product purity is critical. * Components that require resistance to corrosion and easy cleaning. * **Aerospace & Defense:** * Critical components in radar and television tubes. * Aerospace structures requiring performance at cryogenic temperatures. * **Electronics & Electrical:** * Electron tube components (anodes, grids, sid rods). * Spark plug electrodes. * Electrical resistance wires. * **Other Applications:** * Water desalination and distillation plants. * Synthetic fiber production. * Marine and architectural applications. --- **Disclaimer:** The information provided herein is for reference purposes only.
