### **Alloy 86 / Nimonic® 86 / UNS N09866** **High-Chromium Nickel-Based Superalloy for Extreme Oxidation Resistance** #### **1. Overview** **Alloy 86**, commercially known as **Nimonic® 86**, is a nickel-chromium superalloy specifically developed for applications requiring exceptional oxidation and corrosion resistance at very high temperatures. With a chromium content significantly higher than most nickel-based alloys, Nimonic 86 exhibits outstanding resistance to scaling in oxidizing, sulfidizing, and other aggressive environments up to 1150°C (2100°F). The alloy is strengthened by solid-solution hardening and carbide precipitation, making it suitable for long-term service in extreme thermal conditions. #### **2. Chemical Composition (Weight %)** The typical chemical composition of Nimonic 86 is outlined below. The balance is Nickel (Ni). | Element | Content (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Nickel (Ni)** | Balance | Forms the austenitic matrix and provides fundamental high-temperature strength. | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 24.0 - 26.0 | Provides exceptional oxidation, sulfidation, and hot corrosion resistance. | | **Iron (Fe)** | 7.0 max | Controlled impurity; kept low to maintain corrosion resistance. | | **Cobalt (Co)** | 5.0 max | Enhances solid-solution strengthening. | | **Titanium (Ti)** | 0.3 max | Controlled to prevent excessive γ' formation. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.0 max | Improves hot workability. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.5 - 1.0 | Enhances oxidation resistance through protective scale formation. | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.05 - 0.10 | Forms carbides for secondary strengthening. | | **Cerium (Ce)** | 0.01 - 0.10 | Improves oxide scale adhesion and spallation resistance. | | **Zirconium (Zr)** | 0.01 - 0.10 | Enhances creep strength and oxide scale properties. | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.015 max | Impurity, kept low to prevent hot corrosion. | #### **3. Physical Properties** | Property | Value / Condition | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 8.16 g/cm³ (0.295 lb/in³) | | **Melting Range** | ~ 1350 - 1400 °C (2462 - 2552 °F) | | **Mean Coefficient of Thermal Expansion** | 20 - 500°C (68 - 932°F): **14.5 x 10⁻⁶/°C** (8.1 x 10⁻⁶/°F)
